SUCCEEDING generations of anglers drowned their worms in the old Lugsmore Lane Dam and little else disturbed the watery scene over the passing years. But now, a keen community and wildlife enthusiast is hoping that the leisure time action will increase there soon.
Carl Dingsdale of Thatto Heath, is inviting our readers to come up with suggestions as to what might be done in that direction. He writes that, last month, the site was officially opened up as an area of natural beauty where people could unwind. "I'm now seeking the community's help in coming forward with ideas about what they would like to see there or would like to be involved with."
He lists the following as possible examples: wildlife studies for local schools; encouragement for local photographers and artists to capture the scene; activities for Boy Scout and other youth movements.
Adds Carl: "We are hoping to obtain a small centre for visitors, sited on the dam banks, at some future date. To achieve this, we are seeking donations and organising various events to raise cash for the essential equipment".
In addition, Carl is seeking any old photographs or stories relating to the dam site, in particular, pictures of the old pump housing, from where water was pumped to Pilkington's to cool the glass process. He'd also welcome any information about the sort of wildlife that once existed in and around the dam.
ANYONE with ideas for the location, with photos to lend or wishing to know more, can write to Carl Dingsdaleat 125 Canberra Avenue, Thatto Heath, St Helens WA9 5RT.
