I AM pleased to read that Preston is holding a Christmas Shopping Evening for the Elderly and Disabled people.
This is to be held on Wednesday, November 14, between 6pm and 8pm.
Has any one given any thought to the time and day before making arrangements? There are a few points of concern for shoppers with disabilities.
On November 14, between 6pm and 8pm, it will be dark and night-time can leave disabled people feeling very vulnerable. For safety, disabled people would prefer to shop in daylight hours.
On that day and given time it could also be raining, freezing or a poor night in general.
As this is the only time set for disabled shoppers and the weather is poor, does this mean that disabled shoppers will have to wait until next Christmas before shopping?
Could disabled and elderly people be given a choice in the days and preferably during daylight hours.
Limiting the disabled and elderly to one dark night (possibly wet) could be classed as discrimination.
Other than holding a shopping evening on a chosen dark night could Preston's service providers who have accessible premises not advertise accessible shopping to allow the elderly and disabled people to shop at will.
