LEYLAND Barracudas took the honours in the North Lancs Micro League Finals for swimmers 12 years and under held at the Salt Ayre Pool, Lancaster.
Teams taking part were Fleetwood, Newton Hall, Preston and Leyland. The atmosphere was tense but exciting as the swimmers did the usual lap of the pool before the event started, hooters blowing and plenty of chanting.
There were an incredible ten new event records set on the night and six of these came from Barracudas.
Taking first places for Barracudas were: 10 year girls' freestyle: Emma Godwin, 11 year boys medley relay: Jack Johnson, Oliver Raimond, Dan Potts and John Halliwell, (new record 1:07.79) 10 year girls breastroke: Lisa Topping, 10 year boys' breastroke: Sam Brewster, 9 year boys medley: Daniel Gregson, William Holme, Jack Thornton and Matthew Norris, 11 year boys' freestyle relay: Dan Potts, Oliver Raimond, Graham Donald and Jack Johnson,10 year girls' medley: Natalie Murray, Lisa Topping, Emma Godwin and Anna Lavelle (new record 1:14.20) 10 year boys' medley: Alex McKay, Sam Brewster, Joe Leeming and Chris Gale, nine year old boys' freestyle relay: Jack Thornton, Luke Gibson, Daniel Gregson and William Holme (new record 1:07.72) 10 year girls' freestyle relay: Lisa Topping, Lisa Holt, Natalie Murray and Emma Godwin (new record 1:05.19) 10 year boys' freestyle relay: Joe Leeming, Sam Brewster, Chris Gale and Alex McKay (new record 1:03.73) 10 year boys' backstroke: Alex McKay, nine year mixed relay: Jack Thornton, Rebecca Eastham, Grace Raines and William Holme, 12 year girls freestyle relay: Nicole Aguilar, Katy Greig, Vicky Woods and Catherine Van-Russelt (new record 58.14) 12 year boys' freestyle relay: Jonathan Bruce, Graham Donald, John Halliwell and Dan King, The final event of the evening was the Cannon mixed freestyle relay with Grace Raines, William Holme, Emma Godwin, Alex McKay, Laura Breakell, Jack Johnson, Catherine Van-Russelt and Dan King for the Barracudas team finishing seven seconds ahead of the third placed club.
Final points and match result: Preston 87, Newton Hall 97, Fleetwood 118 and Leyland 125. A fantastic result and a great feeling as the two team captains, Nicole and Jonathan held the winners' trophies aloft. The poor old coaches, on the other hand, got to sample the therapeutic affects of the Salt Ayre pool water thanks to the kids pushing them in -- that's gratitude!
Barracudas will now compete in the Northern Counties Micro League finals to be held at Lincoln later this month.
