CLITHEROE Ladies travel south this weekend to take part in the national final at Great Yarmouth with a lot of confidence after a stunning victory over Preston ladies last weekend.
Clitheroe A (mens) qualified for the finals some time ago. But with work commitments and people away on holiday, they are finding it difficult to field a squad capable of doing themselves justice. However, it is hoped that they will travel to the finals.
After a final round of matches Low Moor Club were crowned champions of the Clitheroe Pool League.
Legion B looked to have the best chance of taking the championship. A draw would have given them the league but in the Legion derby match the A team put in a stylish display to win 9-3.
This effectively gave the title to Low Moor and both Legion teams ended their season with identical points, 116. This left both teams waiting for the result from Dog Inn Whalley v Buck A, hoping that the Buck would slip up to make the Legion teams play off for runners up spot.
The Buck needed at least a 7-5 win to earn the runners up place and they had to fight all the way to a nail biting last frame to get it. Buck finished on 117.
Waggon and Horses had a similar wait in the first division. White Hart from Sabden had to take all 12 points off Ultraframe to leap frog the Waggon and pinch the title.
But Ultraframe wanted to end on a high note after a run of poor results and since White Hart beat them 9-3 earlier in the season. They finished off any chance the works team had of winning the league and the title was handed to the watching Waggon and Horses team.
In the second division Brown Cow A had to await their fate, having ended the season on 127 points. White Horse A trailed the Cow by four points before playing the Legion C and Horse Shoe had to play New Inn who both harboured slim hopes of the title.
White Horse A took the title with a 6-6 draw at the Legion. Horse Shoe defeated New Inn 8-4 to earn a second place play off this Thursday against Brown Cow A at the Legion.
Station Storm won the third division championship in style some weeks ago to earn themselves a place in the Premier League next season in the revamped league. Dog Music Bar B would have taken second place with a win at Buck Wrinkleys but they ended their season with a nightmare 9-3 defeat, leaving the door open for either Pendle Hotel A or Pendle Witch. The two teams met in the match of the night with the visitors, Pendle Witch from Sabden, winning 7-5.
Buck ladies won the ladies league championship for the first time and Castle ladies finished second, Legion ladies ended in third position.
The cup knockout semi finals will take place on Thursday October 16 at the RBL, Whalley Road, Clitheroe. The following teams must be present for the draw at 7.55pm prompt: Buck, Pendle Hotel B, Whalley Arms and White Horse.
The choice of who plays on table one or two will be by a toss of the coin. The venue and date of the Ladies Challenge Cup final will be decided on completion of both semi finals.
