COMMUNITY Safety Wardens (CSW) could soon be righting wrongs as well as reporting them.
The wardens, who patrol Bury, Prestwich and the borough's other town centres, will have the opportunity to train to be part of a newly-created Techno Team.
The idea aims to provide a rapid response service to hazards and environmental problems that are reported to Bury Council by the wardens and area co-ordinators. It will do this by enabling the wardens themselves to, for instance, mend a broken bench or deal with a loose flag.
The scheme will be run through a partnership between the council and Bury College.
Last Friday (Oct 5) college lecturer David Wyre became a warden for the day and went patrolling the streets. He assessed how wardens spot problems and identified the training that members of the Techno Team will need in order to resolve them. Mr Wyre said: "I really enjoyed spending time with the wardens, getting to know what their job involves and looking at the different skills the team will need.
"The college can then support the Techno Team with specialist advice and training to help them provide an effective service."
CWS manager Mr Ged McGee said that a pilot scheme of the Techno Team last year had been a remarkable success. He added: "Initially it will concentrate on the six main centres of the borough.
"Essentially, it will attempt to tackle those minor non-technical problems which often get overlooked but in many cases only take a few minutes to rectify.
"During the pilot we were amazed at the recognition we received from the public and we look forward to making a real difference on the ground.
