I HAVE just read the front page of the Bury Times (October 2) with horror at the revelation that porta-wards have been erected on the roof of Fairfield Hospital to cope with a possible increase in elderly patients. I am disgusted to think that those in charge of our health care have so little regard for the elderly of our town.

I worked for more than 20 years for social services in a home for the elderly. It was a wonderful place of care and love, and still is. My mother-in-law, who is 96, is being cared for at this home and my husband, myself and family are so very grateful to all the staff for the care she receives.

Our town was once a proud and pleasant place and a lot of our inhabitants gained fame and respect. Where has this era gone?

Situating portable wards on the roof of a hospital beggars belief. The people who took this decision should respect our elderly and remember that they will one day reach the same stage in their lives.
