HEALTH bosses have written to doctors in the South Ribble area after traces of a rare infection were found in water supplies.
North West Water, with the NHS Executive North West, were writing to family doctors across the North West, after a random sample from the Dunmill Rise water system found cryptosporidium in the water.
The microscopic bug, which can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, is usually found in livestock and other animals, but can be spread from person to person.
A spokesman for the NHS Executive North West said the risk to health was extremely small.
