HOME Secretary David Blunkett announced at the Labour Party conference that he would introduce a bill against the incitement of religious hatred. Like most people, I thought this was not a good idea. This type of legislation has been tried before and failed miserably.
There are adequate laws on the statute book to cover this problem so more are not required. I refer to the laws of libel and slander.
In a diverse society like ours, where free speech is the bedrock of democratic society, there are bound to be contrasting views among cultures with different backgrounds.
It has been recently reported that distasteful letters have been delivered to mosques. I suggest that these letters should be treated with the contempt they deserve. I attribute such rubbish to a few cranks, who have no support whatsoever.
