I READ with irony your article 'Double accident after fuel spill on road' (LET, October 9). As an advanced motorcyclist, I and fellow riders have to negotiate far too regularly diesel spills from commercial vehicles.
The irony is that this particular incident happened to affect a number of four-wheeled vehicles and that's why you reported it.
It is just not good enough that commercial vehicles, including coaches, buses and lorries, can spill diesel oil without regard to other road users. Surely, it's time legislation was introduced to force all commercial vehicle manufacturers to fit pressurised fuel systems that would eliminate fuel spillages.
It is just another example of the injustice of current policing policies, which victimise motorcyclists who commit minor offences, such as after-market exhausts and small number plates, while ignoring the possible lethal effect that a diesel spill can cause.
It is time that the government and police clamped down on these reckless potential killers instead of victimising the potential victims.
