I WAS amazed to read that Fred Moor had started a web site for people to object to the fate of Ashton Institute. Mr Moor was employed by Fylde Borough Council for many years as Director of Tourism which included the whole of Ashton Gardens, part of which was Ashton Institute -- a building which has been unoccupied for the past 20 years and allowed to deteriorate.
Having served on the Council for 12 of those years I cannot recall one letter of suggestion as to what purpose the building should be put. As the number of residents in the Fylde is in excess of 76,000, the 3,500 signatures Mr Moor claims to have is only five per cent of the electorate objecting to change of use to residential.
When the Anchorage in Lytham was handed back to the Council it was in quite good order. As with the Anchorage people have waited until the place is becoming an eyesore before raising objections for change of use.
Councillors are elected to serve the borough and should be left to decide on matters relating to projects put before them.
