IAN Hodgson's remarks (Letters, October 9) about identity cards being the thin end of the wedge were a superb blending of fact and fiction, with a little paranoia thrown in.
However, back on earth, the following needs to be considered -- the Government has lost control of our immigration system and the Human Rights Act and the civil liberties lobby have effectively destroyed any workable system the Government may have had to get a grip of this problem.
There are more than a million illegal immigrants in the UK, 500,000 of whom cannot be traced and the situation can only get worse.
There is one way to gain a bit of ground, but has the Government the backbone to do it? Legislation should be passed without delay, making it compulsory for everyone to carry identity cards.
Genuine law-abiding people have nothing to fear.
No, Mr Hodgson, the population are not asleep, far from it. They are very concerned about immigration and the problems that are stacking up. We should be telling the Government to get it sorted. Now.
