Pilkington Recs 20 Orrell St James 30 RECS bowed out of the Lancashire Cup in a game that was almost a carbon copy of a league meeting between these two sides four weeks ago.
Again Recs went into a healthy early lead only to see the visitors claw their way back into the match and snatch victory in the final quarter.
Orrell scored first through a drop goal, but soon after Recs were in front from a sweeping move, with good hands from Andy Kilmurray and John Rees saw busy wingman Andy Burns squeeze in at the corner.
Minutes later good work from John Pennington and Chris Bailey, resulted in hooker Gareth Griffiths burrowing through from acting half back for a try. An early injury for home stand off Kilmurray didn't help matters, but things got better midway through the half through the try of the game.
Centre Rees broke the defensive line and he ran 75 metres to score, rounding the full-back on his way to scoring a great try, Mark Forber added the conversion.
Recs had to get through a lot of defence leading up to half time and the turning point came with the last play of the half when the visitors scored through a spilled bomb to peg it back to 14-7 at the break.
Into the second half Recs began to lose their shape, discipline and ultimately possession as the visitors snatched two converted tries to go in to the lead on three quarter time.
A further drop goal and converted try saw Recs trail by eight points ten minutes from time.
Good work from Paul Houghton, Rees and Bailey did raise some hopes in the closing stages as a loose ball from a Rees run was collected by Rick Yelland and the hardworking forward drove in to score.
