Leigh RMI 3 Woking 1by David Magilton
WITH manager Steve Waywell running the rule over next week's FA Cup opponents Worksop, assistant Dave Miller found himself in charge.
A goal down after 23 minutes and his side looking second best was not the start he wanted. Drastic action was called for and Miller duly obliged with a double substitution that transformed the game in Leigh's favour.
A new formation spearheaded by substitutes Dino Maamria and Michael Twiss worked wonders with the duo sharing three goals.
Big striker Warren Patmore put the visitors ahead on 23 minutes when he found himself unmarked for a second time. This time directed a powerful header from a Nick Roddis cross into the back of the net.
The double substitution had an immediate effect and after Ian Monk had seen a curling shot skim the crossbar, he delivered a 40th minute cross that Maamria headed home.
RMI dominated the start of the second-half and Twiss and Maamria missed simple scoring opportunities.
Cracked
But they cracked the Woking defence in the 72nd minute. Neil Fisher's cross found Twiss and he chested the ball down before hammering it home.
The former Manchester United youngster made the game safe eight minutes from time when Tony Black fed him the ball on the edge of the area and he turned superbly before firing home a low drive.
Miller admitted the double substitution was a gamble. "It was nerve-wracking being in charge until the third goal went in. I made the decision and it might have backfired on me, but the team have gone and proved me right," he said.
"I felt that with the formation we were playing we were not getting enough men forward. The first 20 minutes were unacceptable, we were not at the races. But I am delighted the two lads have done the business for us." LEIGH: Westhead, Spooner (Scott 67), German, Durkin, Farrell, Salt (Maamria 26), Monk, Fisher. Hallows (Twiss 26), Kielty, Black. Subs not used: Swan, Heald.
