Sixth -form report: The Sixth-Form Centre is a unit within Blackburn College and offers 38 A and AS level courses. In addition, the centre offers a National Diploma in Sports Science as well as a Vocational A-Level in Science for those who prefer a more hands-on science course. The centre is proud of its enhancement and enrichment programmes such as the Asian Universities Award Scheme for students interested in medicine or teaching, as well as its provision of music, drama, dance, sport and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
Present students: The centre currently has around 800 students. About 85 per cent of final year students progress to university.
History lesson: The Sixth Form at Blackburn College was created in 1984 when tertiary education was introduced in Blackburn and Darwen. The sixth form earned the highest possible grades, ones and twos in all areas, when the college was inspected in 1996 and 1999.
Star students: 2,001 was a magnificent year for our students, with many achieving outstanding A and AS level results. This summer four A-level students were accepted by Oxford and Cambridge colleges. Mark Smith not only gained Grade A in five subjects but was in the top five out of 3,000 candidates nationally in geography. The centre is proud of its music, drama and dance students.
Out and about: The centre provides excellent opportunities for student trips, both at home and abroad, and sport field trips
Something to brag about: The centre is extremely proud of its "value added" record which was described as outstanding by a national figure in the field. Although its provision attracts high flyers, the centre also has an excellent record in bringing out the best in all ability ranges.
What about the parents?: The Sixth-Form College devotes a lot of time and energy in engaging in two-way contact with parents. and is especially proud of its record of educating whole families. The college's next open evenings are on November 12 and 13 -- come and see for yourselves.
What would you do with £100,000?: Continue to develop our use of new technology as a support to teaching and learning.
