OH! What a night it was - as Kid Creole and the cream of the disco crops 'strutted their funky stuff' in a pulsating performance with sensational songs from the seventies to out-dazzle the illuminations that twinkled along Blackpool's Golden Mile.
Set against the bright lights of New York in 1976, the theme from Shaft created an electrifying opening that gave way to an explosion of seventies glamour in an array of bright frills and flares, platforms and hot pants.
Kid Creole gives a brilliant performance as Brutus T Firefly, the power behind the Inferno night club, where wannabe pop star Rik (sensitively played by Stuart Ramsay) falls for the sensuous Nikkie (Becky Reaney) whose dancing is faultless but who could perhaps treat the beautiful ballad 'When I Need You' a little more gently.
The essence of the show is in its throbbing disco dancing and great songs like Ladies Night, Celebration and Car Wash, so who cared about the weak storyline when every dancer could perform feats of the funkiest and sassiest kind.
Nigel Roche as Stretch Mulligan, just blew me away (a phrase invented in the Seventies) camping it up as the disco's bouncer, and leading a hilarious performance of 'Y.M.C.A.' (Watch out for the Red Indian with incredible muscle definition!)
Enraptured by the show's magic, the capacity audience was on its feet and singing along well before the finale, and people all over the theatre joined in and started a Love Train.
OH! WHAT A NIGHT, Opera House, Blackpool, until November 3
