BURY have the giant task of beating league leaders Brentford tonight - but most fans have not even given it a thought yet, writes STEVE CANAVAN of the BOLTON EVENING NEWS.
They have been too busy concentrating on a frenzied spate of tranfer activity, which yesterday saw talented teenager Chris Armstrong join Oldham in a deal which could eventually swell the Shakers bank balance by £400,000.
On the plus side - and what a massive plus it is - striker Jon Newby turned down a big-money move to Andy Ritchie's Latics.
Add to that the signature of Jamie Stuart - a former England under 21 left-full back and a ready made replacement for Armstrong - and, all in all, Bury supporters will not be too dismayed.
Newby's decision was a real bonus. He decided to stay at Gigg even though he was offered more money to go to Oldham.
"It is not to do with the money. It is about happiness," Newby explained to the BEN.
"I have never been as happy at a club as I have been at Bury and I don't want to go.
"I told Oldham yesterday that I would not be signing for them. I just want to put all this behind me now and get on with scoring goals and helping Bury get away from the bottom of the table."
Manager Andy Preece is delighted that Newby is staying - and even more pleased to have a player with the right attitude in his squad.
"It is great that Jon is staying and it shows that we must be doing something right if a player wants to stay even though we are bottom of the league," said Preece.
Hopefully Newby can start scoring tonight when Bury make the trip South to Griffin Park to take on the table-toppers.
Teenager Paul O'Shaughnessy (knee) - who made his league debut on Saturday - and on-loan Leeds United winger Harpal Singh (hamstring) are missing. But, on the bright side, Danny Swailes, Sam Collins and Chris Billy might be fit to play a part tonight. Kick off is 7.45pm.
