IN "Traders' plea to allow free parking" (LET, October 16), Ron O'Keeffe, president of Blackburn and District Chamber of Trade, states: "Trade is down across the town."
It would seem that Mr O'Keeffe and others were not listening at the last Chamber of Trade meeting when a number of businesses reported increased trade since roadworks began.
To those unfamiliar with the town centre at present, I would say do not be put off by the "doom and gloom merchants." Blackburn is still accessible, although depending on the route you choose, it may take slightly longer.
What Mr O'Keeffe should have pointed out is that many shops in Blackburn are thriving. A number of new shops have, or are about to, open in the town and the precinct is now so full that traders are doing business from barrows.
In addition, at the last chamber meeting we were informed that there are a number of businesses interested in moving into Lord Square. Again, Mr O'Keeffe must have missed this.
Free car parking would not only further exacerbate the situation by encouraging more cars, but also, I am sure, ultimately cost Blackburn's council tax payers more money.
Blackburn has an enviable (although not perfect) public transport system and anyone wishing to rediscover the Blackburn town centre shopping experience would be well advised to leave their car at home and come and visit the many happy shopkeepers who are anticipating a profitable December and looking forward to a very happy new year when the road works are completed.
