MOST of your readers letters appear to comment upon things that have happened. Could I write about a future event and ask that your readers form an opinion and then write it in or contact their councillors both local and county.
The future event that I write about is that sometime in the future there is a proposal to re-site the fire station and now in Clark Street, Morecambe. Thoughts, ideas and opinions are needed before a decision is taken by the county council on the disposal and future of the site.
At a recent Poulton Residents' Meeting it was suggested that the site might be landscaped, which brought a good response from the audience. However, other ideas are now surfacing which need to be considered and put forward before the County Council decides. One thing seems to be apparent. Local residents do not want any more housing development.
It would be a shame to demolish what would appear to be a good and perfectly sound building. Could a use be found that would benefit the Poulton neighbourhood?
An interest has been expressed that the Sea Cadets in their premises in Pedder Street would like to obtain the building to give them more scope. Another suggestion is to form a Naval Academy to provide for the teenage and young adult population, both boys and girls, to give them training in yacht and boating techniques, the building is only a short distance from the bay.
Could we provide for our youth, to them off the streets, to give them discipline, excitement and comradeship that comes with "messing about in boats?"
Another thought would be possibly to build a two-storey car park on the reminder of the site with an entrance on Clark Street. This building could be designed so as not to be obstructive and to be in keeping with the surrounding properties.
If need be, could we ask that Poulton Regeneration Money be used or, if this is not possible, that a scheme be planned to attract Government finance.
Please put pen to paper and make your opinion and ideas known before rather than after the event.
