ACCRINGTON Road Runners are mourning the loss of club stalwart Alton Hodgson who died suddenly on Sunday.

Seventy five-year-old Al, who had been a club member for twelve years, had a love affair with the marathon, and was seldom seen racing over any other distance.

In all he completed 28, and as the years advanced he became more prolific.

Last year alone he completed seven and this year had run in London, Blackpool, the Isle of Man and Manchester.

The Manchester race was his last event, and he ran all the way finishing comfortably in 5:05.

This weekend he was going to run the Snowdonia Marathon, one of his favourite events.

He had lived in Carter Street in Accrington, but he retired to the Isle of Man and died there at home.

Accrington Road Runners would like to extend their sympathies to his wife Edith and his family.

As a mark of respect the club will be holding a minute silence before the start of Sunday's Accrington 10K Road Race.
