THE three Ramsbottom teams all won convincingly in Division One of the Bury District Table Tennis League this week and, surprisingly, it was the A team who were the only team to drop a set when Graham Jeffries of Location beat Dave Newton.
The A team are still top of the table by a clear margin and the B and C teams nicely placed in the top half.
The Mosses B team fared no better than their A team as they lost by the maximum score to Little Lever and Cricketers, not to be outdone, beat Prestwich A, also 10-0.
ELPM A and Unsworth are at the bottom of Division Two and both teams lost 9-1 this week, ELPM to Ramsbottom D and Unsworth to Seedfield Meths A. This victory puts Seedfield A into second place in the league table, just behind St Philips A who had a 7-3 win against Prestwich C.
The Prestwich D team did better, beating Adelphi 6-4, and it was by that same 6-4 score that Manchester Maccabi overcame Ramsbottom Town E with Stuart Landes making his first appearance of the season for Maccabi.
Carlton Club C have opened a seven point gap at the top of Division Three after their 8-2 victory at home to Red Hall. Alan Menzies was the player to win all three and maintains his 100 per cent record at the top of the Top Ten table. Bolton Road B are in second position after beating their own A team 6-4 even though Keith Mills scored three for the A team.
Another Bolton Road player to score a treble and still finish on the losing side was Bryan Shaw for the Bolton Road C team who lost 6-4 to Seedfield Meths B. Other players to score three were David Holden, for St Philips C in their 7-3 victory against BGSOB and Les Suss for Maccabi B as they drew with Ramsbottom Town F.
BGSOB B are on top of Division Four this week after their 6-4 victory against ELPM B and are closely followed by Claybank A who could only manage a draw against Nomads, who have Peter Gregory to thank for his treble. Neil Cowburn also scored three wins for Holmar A as they defeated BGSOB C-3 whilst at Maccabi C, Frank Sheldon and Louis Samuels both scored maximums against Seedfield D.
BGSOB D scored their first two points of the season when they won the first two sets of the evening against ELPM C, but after that ELPMC came back strongly to take the remaining eight sets and win the match 8-2.
The ELPM D team did well to take four points from second in the table Holmar A, for whom Phil Wardle scored three wins. Prestwich F were too strong for Bolton Road D as were Claybank B against Seedfield Meths, Prestwich and Claybank both winning 9-1.
The draws for the first round of the MacDonald Cup and the second round of the League Cups have been made. Club secretaries and players are asked to note the change of date of the League Cup matches from week commencing November 19 to week commencing October 29.
The next round of the Dwyer Cup and the first round of the Poytress Cup will now be played during the week commencing November 19.
Players are also asked to note that the early rounds of the end of season tournament will take place at the Hilton Centre, Horwich on Sunday, April 7 and finals night will be at the ELPM Social Club on Monday, April 15.
The next league meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 6 at Castle Leisure Centre at 7.30pm.
