THIS is a show, which sets the theatre buzzing in every sense of the word. Based on a French play with a set evocative of the 50's B movies, its very staginess gives it charm.
In a performance signed for the deaf, where the signer, Isolte Avila, was a 'fly on the wall', very balletic in her movements, you entered the closed world of a family of monsters. The least monstrous thing was the fly.
A multi media experience using hand-held cameras and video screens in combination with 'Flash Gordon' style scientific equipment.
Sara Poyser played Helene, wife of Andre, the eponymous experiment gone horribly wrong, with a mixture of sexiness and hysteria. Simon Startin excellently portrayed creepy Francois her brother in law. Rebecca Little was convincing as the daughter, whose hobby was pulling the wings off flies.
Andre, Craig Cheetham, needed his libido sorting out with a cold shower, both before and after his transformation. Oldham stalwart, John Elkington lent gravitas to his part of the policeman, Inspector Charas.
This gives GM experiments a bad name. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours, like this audience did, you will enjoy this weirdly wacky production.
The Fly - Oldham Coliseum, until November 10
