POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident in which a 60-year-old local man died.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was walking in Bolton Road near the railway bridge close to Blackburn Royal Infirmary about 6.50pm on Sunday.

He stepped into the carriageway and was struck by two cars, travelling in opposite directions.

The man was attended to by a rapid response unit but was dead on arrival at Blackburn Royal Infirmary.

Graham Speak, paramedic at Darwen ambulance station, said he suffered multiple fractures and massive head injuries. The coroner has been informed.

The first car stayed at the scene of the accident and people from that car are currently being interviewed. The second vehicle initially stopped but then drove off before the police were able to speak to the driver.

The second car is described as being a white saloon having the appearance of a Toyota Carina or Vauxhall Vectra type.

A woman who may have been associated with this vehicle spoke to other people at the scene.

She is described as white in her late 20's, 5ft, 6ins tall of a slim build with bleached blonde hair in a bob style.

She was wearing a white top and trousers and was heard to use the name Saj. which police believe may refer to her boyfriend or husband.

Det Chief Inspector Ian Kennedy said: "We are also appealing for anyone in the area to contact the police, including the drivers of a bus and other vehicles who drove past or stopped at the scene.
