CLITHEROE left it until the last kick of the game to secure maximum points against struggling Glossop in the NWCL Division One.

Neil Spencer put the Blues out of their misery deep into injury time with the only goal of a game that Lee Sculpher's men had dominated.

But until Spencer's timely intervention it looked as though Clitheroe would miss out on what should have been a comfortable home win.

"It was one-way traffic for much of the game but we just couldn't finish," said an exasperated Sculpher.

"I know I am starting to sound like a broken record but it was the same old story. We had the chances to put the game beyond doubt we just didn't take them."

To underline the point Clitheroe even contrived to miss a second half penalty. Neil Reynolds saw his spot kick saved midway through the second half after Barry Harts's run from half way had been brought to an illegal end.

With time running out Carl Greenwood saw an effort come back off the bar as Clitheroe piled bodies forward.

Glossop rarely threatened and Clitheroe keeper Chris Richens didn't have a save of note to make.

"We were on top throughout but we didn't turn the pressure into goals and we nearly paid the price," said Sculpher.

"I was relieved when the goal went in and the final whistle came almost straight away but we should have had the game in the bag after 20 minutes."
