A RADIO stalwart has joined a fundraising campaign to help brighten up the life of a disabled youngster who was at death's door earlier this year.

Adrian Ross, one of the original DJs on pioneering 1960s station Radio Caroline, is organising a money-spinning charity night for Amos Mason who was born with severe learning disabilities.

The 12-year-old, from Ingol, spent ten weeks in hospital after falling seriously ill.

Now Adrian, is planning a charity night with rock bands, magicians, DJs and raffle prizes. Adrian explained: "The family are personal friends of mine and I just thought it was something I could do for them and for Amos.

"But the response to get everything for the function for nothing shows the generosity of all the people who have contributed."

Preston-born Adrian, 52, who lives in Cuerden, is a presenter on Chorley FM, and has worked alongside the famous names of yesteryear, such as Johnnie Walker and Simon Bates, on the Radio One Roadshow.

He has managed to persuade Rock band Waterfront, who have appeared on the Big Breakfast, Chorley group Something Catchy and magician and DJ Paul Marlow to appear for free.

Adrian, who was also at the forefront of a new BBC radio station in Bahrain and operates a disco business locally, added: "I 'm a community person and want to put something back into the community. To give something to Amos was great."

Amos lives with his mum and dad, Ruth and Glenn Mason. Ruth, 35, said: "Adrian said he desperately wanted to do something for Amos.

"Everybody has been very kind. All these groups have come free of charge. Adrian's worked very hard to get a whole range of things."

Ruth said the cash that is raised could well go to providing a sensory room at home for Amos, who attends Pear Tree School, Kirkham.

But it isn't the first time friends have rallied around for the youngster.

Amos has just returned from a trip to America where he swam with dolphins after fundraisers raised the cash for the trip.

She added: "He's a very happy lad, a robust big chunky lad. Since coming back from swimming with the dolphins he's so content. It definitely made a difference.

"He loves music, and his room is decorated with aliens and twinkly stars all over the ceiling."

The big night takes place at the BNFL Club, Salwick, Preston, on November 15.

Tickets are £7.50 in advance, available from Adrian on 01772 457232, or £10 on the door.
