I WAS VERY disappointed to hear that the Waring & Gillow memorial plaque had been removed from its location in the former Waring & Gillow building on North Road, Lancaster, without the knowledge or consent of the city council.
Had planning permission been sought before its removal, members of the planning committee would have had the opportunity to give their views and to put forward ideas and suggestions on a new location.
Since publication of details of this matter in the local press. I have had a number of enquiries from members of the public who do not feel that the Judges' Lodgings is the proper place for a memorial plaque consisting of names of local men who worked at Waring & Gillow and who served in the local forces.
The general consensus amongst most seems to be that the correct place for this would be in Lancaster Town Hall which, when all is said and done, is home to a vast collection of Waring & Gillow pieces and examples of their construction work.
After all, what better place for it than in the foyer of the town hall where, on Armistice Day, we could honour those on the list by placing a wreath on it at the same time as the Cenotaph. It would also then stay within the city council boundaries where relatives of local men who served could have sight of it.
I would welcome comments from ex-servicemen and women and members of the public.
Cllr Janet Horner
Mother of the Council
