I AM a Green Party councillor and so, according to Richard Newman-Thompson (Citizen Letters), must be a zealot and a fanatic.

Given that I read Mr Newman-Thompson's letter on Thursday, perhaps it would be instructive to let readers know some of what I did in my zealot-like way on that day.

I clocked in at Lancaster Town Hall at 8.35am and began work on a number of issues such as: flooding of cellars in Brook Street, a letter to the police about a juvenile nuisance incident, a comment to the Evening Post about Arriva's cutting of cross-country train services to Lancaster and Morecambe, passing on a suggestion from a taxi driver that there should be a shelter at the bus station taxi rank, final plans for a hedge and tree planting day at Dallas Road Gardens, a blocked drain on Westbourne Road etc.

At 11.30 I pedalled off to Morecambe to try to put a package together with an extremely helpful tourism officer to allow the National Green Party conference to come to Morecambe (if it succeeds, I promise to give Mr. Newman-Thompson advance warning so that he can book his holidays).

Then a short trip down the prom to Morecambe Town Hall for discussions about a new "Highways Partnership", waste collection, enforcing the ban on alcohol in public places, payment of Council Taxes in Post Offices, digging up pavements by cable companies, and so on.

On returning home at 5.15 it was nice to hear a phone about a successful funding application for play equipment in my ward.

Like other councillors, I enjoy tackling these important community issues. However, I am also proud to stand for Green ideals about creating a more ecologically sustainable, just and peaceful society.

If that makes me a zealot and a fanatic, then guilty as charged!
