CAN anyone help me to trace the history of a pewter tankard recently found in an hedge near my home, but now returned to its owner?
It is inscribed Lancaster Regatta, Sept 5th 1865, Lancashire Witches Stakes, The Duchess. G Fitzsimmons, C Winder and W Charnley. Stroke, T F Fenwick, 'Beating the Cam'.
It is glass bottomed with the base stamped with maker/retailer, James Dixon & Sons, and what looks like a pattern number, 482, and two other marks, 'c' and 64.
The size is about 6.5ins high and 4ins diameter at the top.
