AN amateur village archivist has never lost her love for her home village.
This week, Howe Bridge-born Joan Szymanowski has appealed to villagers to support The Bridgers, a small but dedicated band working for the area.
She has also praised Atherton councillor Sue Loudon for her backing of the recent Howe Bridge Environment Week.
Joan, who lives in Leigh, said 2,000 homes were leafleted but was disappointed more people did not attend events including village walks, a quiz, coffee mornings, a hot-pot supper, disco and litter picking.
There was also the chance for people to have a say on the future of the area.
Joan said: "It would seem that some thought the week would be politically orientated because a councillor's name was attached. I attended some of the events and I can assure them it was not. Those who did not turn up missed an interesting time.
"Howe Bridge used to be the kind of place where people looked after the village and each other. There used to be a saying among the old folk that if you kicked one Howe Bridger, all the rest limped.
"The Bridgers are trying to do their best and I would say to anyone living there, it's your village, try at least sitting in on one of their friendly monthly meetings."
The group meets at the Village Club on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Further details from 01942 883439 or 01942 897240.
