SON of Stand, Warren Hegg, has been appointed captain of Lancashire Cricket Club for the 2002 season, writes STEVE BOTT.

Hegg, who was selected for England's tours of India and New Zealand, is the first wicketkeeper/skipper to be appointed by the Red Rose county.

Hegg, whose mother Glenda is secretary at the Whitefield club, said: "This is great news, particularly after my selection for England this winter.

"There is a great team spirit at Lancashire and with our blend of youth and experience I am looking forward to working with our new cricket manager Mike Watkinson and getting the club back to the winning ways we experienced throughout the 1990s."

Club chairman Jack Simmons said: "Warren is a Lancastrian through and through and he's a true 100 per center.

"I cannot think of a more enthusiastic cricketer and I feel sure his positive influence on the team will refelct in the team's performances.

Warren, whose brother Martin plays for Stand, made his debut for Lancashire against Glamorgan in 1986.

In 1989 he took 11 catches against Derbyshire, equalling the world record for the most catches in one match.
