THE manager of one of the oldest Asian football teams in the country has welcomed a tournament to help kick out racism.

Paak FC, founded back in 1968, took part in the inaugural event organised by Martin Barnes, editor of the Burnley fanzine When the Ball Moves.

Javed Iqbal, manager of the Nelson-based team, believes football is the perfect way to bring all the community together.

He said: "We've been competing as a team for the past 33 years and are still one of only a few Asian teams in East Lancashire.

"Everyone loves to play football so it is the perfect way to break down barriers and I welcome what Martin is trying to do."

The Burnley event, held at Turf Moor Leisure Centre co-ordinated with the nationwide Let's Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.

It brought together teams from across the community.

Martin said: "Nothing like this has been held in Burnley before and I thought it was about time we addressed the situation rather than sweep in under the carpet.

"After what happened in Burnley during the summer, I thought a tournament like this helps to build bridges. From a Burnley fan's point of few, I would love to see more Asian supporters at Turf Moor."

While the inaugural tournament only attracting six teams, Martin is convinced that there is a place for such a competition -- and he is looking to make it an annual event.

Martin is also hoping to attract funding for future tournaments.

He said: "It is something the town needs and next year I am hoping to attract more teams and hold the competition over two days." Bell Woven Young Guns beat Paak FC 'A' 2-1 in the final.

Other teams to take part were TBS, Judullah and a Tottington High School side from Bury.
