PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice is urging people to take advantage of a new series of official maps which show open access land where they can roam.

He campaigned for many years for more access to the countryside and nearly a year ago the Countryside Act was passed by Parliament.

Under the Rights of Way Act 2000, the Countryside Agency is in the process of producing maps of open countryside and registered common land, showing areas where there will be a new right of access for walkers. The first draught maps showing South East and North West England will be published on November 12.

Mr Prentice said: "It will be great to see the first maps, especially as Pendle will be featured. It is important that as many people as possible look at them to check no areas are omitted.

"There is a three months public consultation and this will be the only chance that walkers and others will be able to comment on the maps. I want to encourage people to examine them and pass on their views."

The maps will be available on the Countryside Agency website at www.countryside.gov.uk on November 12 and in local authority offices and selected libraries from November 16.

The deadline for responses on this consultation is February 11, 2002.
