1936: The first British television service began, although only 400 sets had been sold.
1960: A British jury acquitted Penguin books of obscenity over the publishing of D H Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover.
1961: Helen Shapiro was Walking Back to Happiness at the top of the pop charts.
1967: Prime Minister Harold Wilson sued The Move over a postcard used to publicise Flowers in the Rain. It featured a mocked-up nude picture of Wilson. The band were ordered to destroy all copies of the postcard.
1978: The Daily Star was launched.
1982: Channel 4 was born. On the first night, the first episode of Brookside aired.
