FOLLOWING yet another accident recently on the Grane Road between Haslingden and Blackburn -- this time, caused by a diesel spill -- is it not time to call for a restriction on HGVs using the road as a 'short cut'?
There is a sign on the A56 directing HGVs heading towards the M65 to stay on the dual carriageway, but it is totally ignored by those who know Grane Road and wish to save themselves a few miles!
As a daily commuter on this route, I am totally fed-up with the constant stream of lorries, etc. which crawl uphill at 20mph and then career down hill at dangerous speeds, often well above the 50mph limit. It creates traffic jams on almost the whole stretch and the road is not at all suitable for these vehicles.
I would also like to see regular police speed checks made. I am often overtaken by drivers who ignore the speed limits, particularly on the 30mph Helmshore end and the 40mph straight length at the Blackburn end.
There would be fewer accidents and near-misses if the traffic was allowed to flow freely without being held up by crawling HGVs and the 'shortcutters' had more respect for our local roads by adhering to the speed limits.
