EVER since it became apparent that a Labour government was going to ensure Bury had a hospital worthy of the 21st century, Conservatives like Dorothy Gunther (Your Letters, Oct 26) have sought to denigrate the scheme. Why?
Is it spite or envy because a Labour government has done in four years what the Conservatives failed to do in 18? We are delivering the largest modernisation and new-build programme for our hospitals in the history of the National Health Service.
As to access to Fairfield Hospital, Councillor Gunther is totally wrong to imply that Labour councillors are wholly satisfied with the current situation. However, we are determined not to prejudice the investment which our town so desperately needs. Furthermore, we have said time and again that we will keep the situation under review.
Finally, if the health authority were to fund a new access road at a cost of some £1-£2 million, that money would have to be taken from patient services. Does Coun Gunther believe that is a good idea and good for health in Bury? I certainly don't!
