AS chairman of planning at Hyndburn Council, I strongly object to MP Greg Pope's mention of "petty bureaucracy gone mad" when he referred to a planning decision for a formal garden in the green belt in Clayton-le-Moors (LET, October 30).
Whilst not everyone may not agree with the planning decision, I would expect a person in Mr Pope's position to recognise and accept a democratic decision which has been made within local and national law.
I consider that "petty bureaucracy gone mad" is an insult to the intelligence, integrity and dedication of the council officers and of the 12 persons who make up the planning committee.
Referring to the application at Home Lea, what the media failed to report is that Mr Jackson was advised in 1996 that the formation of a formal garden in the green belt would be contrary to adopted policies and would be unlikely to be approved. I cannot understand why he continued with such an expensive project.
Councillor JOHN GRIFFITHS, Whitecroft View, Baxenden.
