UNIVERSITY officials have made free vaccinations against Meningitis C available every morning from a campus health centre.
The move follows the diagnosis of a man with the B-strain. The swift actions of his housemates meant he was treated straight away and is expected to be released from hospital by Friday.
A University spokesman said students should remain vigilant, because there is no vaccine for the B-strain, bacterial Meningitis septicaemia. "The main thing we have to guard against is complacency," he said. "Students are advised to look out for each other and to be alert for symptoms at all times.
"We take the health of our students very seriously and with 25,000 of them we are aware that we have a risk of cases coming up each year.
"Our procedures have proved to be successful, but we are keeping a constant eye on the situation."
Meanwhile, another student is recovering from a viral infection, which initially showed some indication of Meningitis. This student was on a different course of study to the man who contracted the bacterial strain.
