BURY-based Peelers Cricket Club's trip to Minorca was a success when they defeated the island's representative side in a high-scoring match.
The local team racked up 272 for 5 from their allotted overs with Mike Churchill top scoring with 61, Matthew Ward hitting 58 and Peter Thomson chipping in with 51.
Despite looking well set for victory at 141 for 0 in the 24th over the islanders, who featured former Elton CC player Jeff Barker in their ranks, fell 21 runs short at 251 for 3 mainly thanks to a useful spell with the ball by Ward who finished with 3 for 46.
A possible second game against another touring side fell through at the last minute but all the 20-odd strong touring party had a great time.
A return match would have to wait until 2004 as Minorca's fixture diary is booked up until for another three years but with the Peelers' club's 30th anniversary on the horizon a trip to another island could be on the cards!
