PLANS to establish a new Health Authority for Cumbria and Lancashire have been welcomed by Burnley Borough Council.
Moves to replace the existing 95 Health Authorities with 30 Strategic Health Authorities were considered at a meeting of the council's executive.
The consultation document produced by the Department of Health proposed six options covering different boundaries and areas for the new authority.
The executive of the council has agreed with the consultation paper and the recommended option to establish a single new Strategic Health Authority for the whole of Cumbria and Lancashire.
Councillor Rafique Malik, the council's executive member for social welfare said: "The proposal to establish a new Health authority for Cumbria and Lancashire was the only option that met the Government's criteria for Strategic Health Authorities.
"This move should be viewed in the expectation that Primary Care Trusts and other NHS Trust will be the main driving force for local reform and modernisation of the NHS."
