IT TOOK Glen Little just one touch after two minutes to give the Clarets three points against Watford at Turf Moor on Tuesday, lifting them to second in the first division.
Following the 1-0 defeat of Watford at Turf Moor, only goal difference separates the Clarets from top spot in the table and the goalscoring hero was delighted with the haul from three successive home games.
"We'd have liked nine points but we managed to get seven and it is nice to be back up there," he said. "We knew the three home games could put us bang in contention and that has happened."
Little admitted he had felt a bit below par at the weekend but it took him no time to make an impact last night.
"It was my first touch and I wasn't really getting into the game," he explained. "But Paul Weller's played a great ball through and I got a good side foot on it.
"I have got six goals now this season, that is my best ever so it is going along nicely. You always try and get double figures."
But while he was the hero at one end he paid tribute to a couple of players at the other. He said: "The main thing is we defended well and I thought Arthur (Gnohere) and Coxy (Ian Cox) did very well."
Despite rising three places in the table boss Stan Ternent is not getting carried away.
Burnley are now level on points with league leaders Wolves, albeit having played two games more, but Ternent stressed: "It is still very early days, we are not even halfway through the season, but that was a good win for us.
"I am not the type who is always looking at the league, we just set ourselves a target which is a high one, an average of two points a game. We now have 34 from 19 which is very good but I am not certain about the table.
"I do know six or eight points separate the top teams and I think that will continue. But I feel we are getting stronger and the players are improving."
In fact a meagre four points separates Wolves and Burnley from Preston North End in fourth, the Clarets being the only team to have played 19 games. Only 10 points divides the top 15.
Once again Ternent saw his side dominate a game without killing the opponents off and he felt, as on Saturday, they were a little unlucky.
"We are still not quite having the rub of the green," he said as he reflected on the failure to grab a second goal to kill the game. "We had a lot of bodies in the box but the ball would not quite break for us.
"But we are creating chances and sooner or later they will start going in."
Skipper Steve Davis was again ruled out by injury and midfielders Paul Weller and Paul Cook came off with slight knocks in the second half. Ternent admitted that the introduction of substitutes Kevin Ball and Lennie Johnrose had been aimed at making sure they held on to the early lead having lost one against Portsmouth three days earlier.
The victory has set up a mouth-watering encounter at Highfield Road on Saturday, with Coventry City being in the top six, three points and four places below Burnley, but Ternent's team is back on a roll and are aiming to get back to winning ways away from Turf Moor.
