SOCCER: North End defender Ryan Kidd has been forced to retire after picking up a neck injury.
The defender, who has just began his testimonial year, was told by a neurosurgeon at Preston Hospital that he would have to stop playing yesterday.
Club physiotherapist Mick Rathbone said: "Having looked at some recent scans on his neck, he strongly advised Ryan to stop playing football. Although we did fear the worst, it still comes as a huge blow."
Kidd had surgery on a disc problem during the summer.
"The problem is heading the ball and the neurosurgeon has advised that it would be dangerous to continue to do so."
Acting Chairman Derek Shaw said: "Ryan has been here nearly ten years, since being signed by Les Chapman. He is an extremely good player, who has also given great service to North End. He was one of the manager's favourite players and will be sadly missed at the club and at the training ground."
