WHATEVER pays the rent may be true for some jobbing actors. But Damien Flood's leading role as New York city dweller Roger in the controversial rock musical Rent -- which blasts into Blackpool Grand Theatre this month for the first time -- is worth much more to him than just hard cash.
"It's a real challenge for the actors as it really stretches us," said Damien. '"But it's also a challenge for the audience to take on board subjects they may not be that comfortable with.
"It also isn't just another musical but more like modern theatre with a great soundtrack and it's unbelievably exciting to be involved in. And it really means something. Hopefully a few of the audience will take that away with them."
Rent tells a high-powered tale of 80s New York City with rent increases spiralling out of control in the Bohemian Alphabet City while the deadly grip of AIDS and HIV is beginning to squeeze.
The star of smash-hit West End musical Boyband and former Boyzone backing singer could also appear as the lead in the new Queen tribute musical We Will Rock You written by Ben Elton.
"I've auditioned yes," he admits modestly. "But so have lots of other people like Sam Kane so you never know."
And Damien is also keen to assure theatre-goers that Rent is not all doom and gloom. "We've had a wonderful response on the tour so far," he said. "And I'm sure Blackpool audiences will love it because I know they like something different and exciting." But will it all fit on the Grand's modest stage? "Oh yes," Damien assures us. "We just adapt the set to wherever we are and off we go. No problem."
"Most important of all is that people come with an open mind and read the programme beforehand so you have a good grip of what's going on. There's a lot in there and it's a wonderful ride."
Rent stars Damien Flood and Adam Rickitt and runs at the Grand from November 19-24. For tickets from £10 call the box office on (01253) 290190.
