MP David Chaytor has joined the calls for the findings of an investigation into allegations of exam irregularities at a Ramsbottom school to be made public.

As revealed in last Friday's Bury Times the head teacher of Peel Brow Primary School, Mike Duce, had been reinstated after being suspended for nearly six months during a Local Education Authority investigation.

But the school's governing body and the LEA have failed to say whether Mr Duce has been cleared of any wrong doing.

The MP for Bury North said that he would be raising the issue of the powers and responsibilities of school governing bodies with the secretary of state for education and skills. In a letter to Ms Barbara Jack, the chairman of the governing body, the MP wrote: "It does seem to me very important that the outcome of the inquiry conducted by the governing body is made public.

"If the head teacher had been found guilty of the accusations made then the overwhelming majority of my constituents would not expect that he would return to his former duties.

"If, however, he were to have been completely exonerated then it is clearly in his interest, as well as in the interest of the school, that this should be made known to parents and others with an interest in the case."

Mr Chaytor said he had been approached by a number of concerned parents and he urged Ms Jack to disclose the findings of the investigation.

Mr Duce, who has worked at Peel Brow for more than 20 years, was asked to leave just weeks after the school of 246 pupils received a glowing Ofsted report.

During their investigation, education bosses decided to scrub the results of a final year maths test.

A spokesman for the LEA said the decision whether to disclose the findings lay entirely with the school's governing body.

Ms Jack refused to comment.
