TRAVELLING in Lancaster will be easier on a Sunday morning after a local rail company gave in to pressure to provide a bus service.

The city's Green Party had revealed that southbound services in Lancaster started later on a Sunday than at any other mainline station in England.

In a letter to Coun Cllr Jonathan Sear, Virgin Trains' chief executive, Chris Green, said: "Our timetable planners are looking to provide a bus service between Carlisle and Preston, calling at intermediate stations, to connect with train services from there on Sunday mornings."

Details are to be advertised shortly. Coun Cllr Sear said: "This will be good news for everyone who has had to put up with the chaos at Lancaster station on recent Sunday afternoons.

"Of course buses are not ideal, but it is in everyone's interest to get the work done on the West Coast Main Line as quickly as possible, so that reliability improves.

"We will be pressing that Railtrack and its successor to make sure they make full use of these closed periods, so that when all the new trains are in service in a couple of years time we will be able to have something approaching a 24hr, 7 day per week rail service in Lancaster."
