A SCHEME which provides free shed alarms to some of Nelson's most vulnerable people has been launched by Pennine Police as part of Lancashire Constabulary's county-wide crime crackdown, Operation Reassure.
The move follows an increase in the number of shed and outbuilding burglaries in and around Nelson.
Residents have already received crime prevention information but now selected premises will be fitted with free alarms.
Police have 200 of the alarms, which are currently being fitted to sheds and outbuildings.
Paul Robinson, geographic inspector for Nelson and Brierfield, said: "Over the past few months we have seen an increase in the number of burglaries in the Nelson and Brierfield areas, with sheds and outbuildings in particular being targeted. Officers are investigating the offences and making serious inquiries to try to identify the offenders but in the meantime we are urging people to ensure their property is secure. For some of the more vulnerable people and premises this will involve us working with them to fit special alarms."
Further advice on security can be obtained from Burnley Police Station on 01282 472187.
