LOVE, family and ambition pull two young men in different directions in this world premiere production by the English Touring Theatre of The York Realist, by Peter Gill.
Middle class Londoner John (Richard Coyle) meets Yorkshire farmer George (Lloyd Owens) when the pair are working on an amateur staging of the Mystery plays.
What follows is a tender and complex love story between two young men of very different backgrounds.
George is split by the lure of the theatre and bright lights of London, that John promises and the responsibility of caring for his mother (Anne Reid).
The relationship between George and his increasingly ill mother lies at the heart of the play, and the two actors play their roles with real tenderness and character.
But when his mother dies, George is left in a state of confusion unsure of which way to turn.
In George's decision, Peter Gill makes us think about forbidden love, the depth of English class allegiances and the meaning of family and origin.
The production runs until Saturday.
