IDEAS being floated about the future of Clarence Park Lido by two Limefield residents are receiving a steady stream of support.

Gardener Shaun O'Reilly and landscape artist Andrew Williams have hit upon a scheme to restore water quality in the Lido, which has been plagued by a toxic algal bloom problem.

The pair looked at imaginative ways to prevent the problem in future, by boosting oxygen levels in the pool.

They propose building an ornamental island complete with a waterfall feature that would mix water and air.

Part of nearby Gypsy Brook could also be diverted to give the Lido a fresh running water supply.

Although the ambitious plans are at an early stage, they have already been welcomed by the council, who have asked the pair set up a new park user group, the Friends of Clarence Park and Lido. The group would be able to apply for funding from a variety of sources not available to the council.

Shaun and Andrew say they have had a positive response to their plans from community groups, including the Clarence Park Model Boat Club and Age Concern, whose Jubilee Centre overlooks the Lido.

They now plan to consult other residents and form a committee for the friends group.

Gardener Shaun (40), of Halvard Avenue, said: "There are so many people looking after different aspects of the park that there is no-one pushing plans for the Lido forward.

"That's what we would like to do."

"We'd like to get local people involved, especially kids, so that they'd be proud of the Lido and wouldn't want to wreck it."

The pair hope to tap into the talents of builders, plumbers and gardeners in the area who might be able to lend a hand.

Martin Hall, head of Bury Council's client services, said: "We have an expert giving us advice about what we can do at the Lido to get rid of the algae problem for good.

"We are quite happy to support a friends group, provided that the plans are feasible and that they meet with the objectives of the council and the wishes of the community." Residents interested in the ideas can contact Shaun on 0776 985 4821 or Andrew on 0775 968 9325.
