TOMMY Allen's immediate reaction in winning the 'Safe Hand's' award for October was 'Oh no.'

The Stand keeper has helped to extend the NWCL Division Two pacesetter's lead to 13 points at the top of the table with some top class saves. But past experience has taught him that it could be the kiss of death.

"Tommy wasn't sure whether he wanted the award as when he won it at Curzon Ashton a couple of seasons ago, his side went on a losing run," said the Ewood Bridge boss Nick Davis. "He just said 'Oh no!'"

It will be tough tomorrow as the league newcomers face only their second local derby when they welcome Darwen to Haslingden - their first they lost to Nelson, Stand's only league defeat this season.

And Steve Wilkes' side should well and truly test Allen with their formidable strike partnership of 16-goal top scorer Paul Baker and Matt Swailes, who has scored three in his four games at the Anchor Ground.

Stand are hoping to get a decent crowd at Ewood Bridge for the clash - and are keen to attact people to watch them.

"We are top of the league and we are entertaining and I know people have habits where they stick to one club but it would be nice if some fans would give us a try."

Meanwhile Darwen manager Wilkes knows his side play better against higher opposition - and have been boosted following a 2-0 win over Division One side Great Harwood in the Marsden Trophy this week.

"I can't put my finger on why we are being so inconsistent this season," said the Darwen chief. "I don't know whether we will be Jeckyl or Hyde, I never know which team is going to turn up, I'm just hoping it's Jeckyl tomorrow!"
