IAN Pilkington is calling on the Padiham fans to encourage the team back towards the top of the NWCL Division Two.

The 32-year-old striker has been disappointed with some of the criticisms he has heard from a small number of the supporters especially as, after promotion from the North West Counties in the summer of 2000, some of the players are still getting used to life at this level.

"I think it is harsh and I have said so," said the former Chorley, Clitheroe and Rossendale player. "We do need encouragement.

"We did well to finish eighth last season, there are a few inexperienced lads and they can hear the talking on the sidelines.

"We know we haven't started off too well but there was a real buzz after the Darwen win last week and we hope we can build on that."

The 2-1 victory over local NWCL Division Two rivals Darwen was a huge boost for the side who have been struggling for goals.

They are one of the lowest scorers in the division with just 18 and the departure of last season's top hitman Lee Chambers to Kendal has been a huge factor.

But saying that Pilkington has struck home eight - and has a target of 20 for the season - and is hoping that the Storks make an impact soon.

"It has been hard. Last season I played around 30 games with Lee and I knew where he was and how he played.

"This season I have had five different partners and, with no disrepect to the lads, some of them haven't been strikers.

"It does take some getting used to but I am reasonably happy with having eight so far."

'Pilky' may get his settled partner as, after playing Anthony McClusky up front for the last two games, manager Graham Howarth is thinking of keeping the McCluksy-Pilkington partnership.

"I think I will keep it that way for tomorrow," said Howarth. "We could have had more goals against Darwen and the only change I will make will be Steve Yeoman coming back into the side."

Padiham are at home to Cheadle tomorrow. (KO 2pm)
