THE Clarets youth team continued their good form in the league when they hit Carlisle United for six at Gawthorpe on Saturday morning.

It was a complete reversal of fortune for a team that had lost 2-0 to the Cumbrian side earlier in the season in a match where they failed to take their chances.

"We should not have lost up there as we made loads of chances and just could not score," said youth boss Terry Pashley. "To be honest I thought it was going to be the same story because we created four or five good early chances on Saturday before we actually scored."

But everything kicked into place as a couple of youngsters took a leaf out of first team striker Gareth Taylor's book as they headed the home side into a 2-0 half time lead.

"Central defender Liam Eves and Joel Pilkington both headed home from set-pieces, one a free kick, the other a corner," explained Pashley. "Joel is not the biggest player but he is excellent in the air."

There was plenty more to enjoy after the break as the Clarets dominated the match and helped themselves to another four goals.

Damien Hindle netted once, Andrew Waine hit two, one from the spot, and the sixth came from Paul Barrett as the Clarets strolled to victory.

Carlisle did net a late goal but such was the margin of the defeat it was barely even a consolation, although it did give Pashley the chance to remind his players about the importance of playing for the full 90 minutes.

"There was a little bit of over confidence from a couple of people who were not doing the right things," he said.

Pashley's players have got a hectic schedule ahead of them in the next few days as they face three matches, starting tomorrow afternoon with a home game against Wigan in the Football League Youth Alliance.

The Clarets then have Bury away on Saturday in another league game before they welcome Tranmere Rovers to Turf Moor for a Lancashire Youth Cup tie, kick-off 7.15.

"That will be a tough game for us because they are flying high in the league," warned Pashley, who hopes to have a virtually full squad to choose from.

"Steven Richardson got a bit of a knock at the weekend but we are hoping he will be fit for tomorrow's match. Welsh striker Rhys Carpenter is now in training and so he might have a run out against Wigan."

The three matches will all provide useful preparation work for the clash with Manchester City in the big one, the FA Youth Cup, which takes place at Maine Road a week on Sunday.
