A COUNCIL has vowed to fix all faulty street lamps within five days of them being reported broken -- but needs the public's support.

Blackburn with Darwen Council is urging people to report any lights they see not working.

Coun Florence Oldfield, vice chairman of the Police and Community Forum, said: "At this time of year, as the hours of darkness impact more on the public's evening activities, it is important to reduce the negative effect of inoperative lights.

"A specialist team is sent out to inspect reports made to the council and usually lights can be fixed on the spot.

"The operating hours of street lights are longer during the winter and more faults detected and repaired. The aim is to attend to all defects within five working days.

"Over 97 per cent of lamps are repaired at that visit. The remainder are expedited as quickly as possible but the time taken depends upon the nature of the problem and what resources are required in resolving it."

And anyone concerned that their neighbourhood does not have enough street lights can also contact the council.

Coun Oldfield added: "Requests for additional lighting can be made. The number of requests implemented is affected by the volume received, the cost of installation and funding available.

"We have an excellent team who deal with street lighting and all areas are inspected regularly. But we still need residents to report any lamps that are faulty or not working, especially during winter".

To report faulty street lights, call the council's street lighting department on 01254 841282.
